Batman #19 (DC, 1943) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white to white pages. That titan of Batman artists, Dick Sprang, began his long run on the character with this landmark issue. Sprang was one of the first artists hired by DC to assist on the Batman feature; his work was stockpiled by the company for a number of months as a precaution to Bob Kane or Jerry Robinson's possible draft into military service. As a result, the stories in this issue (including one starring the Joker) take on the appearance of an earlier artistic style started by Kane. Within a short time, Sprang's art came into its own, making him identifiable as "the Good Batman Artist" to several generations of fans. This clean copy shows very little wear to its inky-black background. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $600; VF 8.0 value = $1,250. CGC census 7/05: 5 in 6.5, 7 higher.
