Batak Amulet
From the Batak people of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia come artifacts rich in ancient lore. This 12.75" X 5.75" Scapula Bone Amulet is ornately etched with the Ritual Batak Lunar Calendar, Batak Compass and both a carving and etching of a lizard depicting the God Boraspati. The identification of auspicious and inauspicious days is/was one of the Datu's, (magician-priest), pricipal task. Before every festival, journey, planting or havest, building of a home or village, it is necessary to decide whether the planned time of the project is advantageous. To do this, a magician-priest uses his extensive knowledge of the calendar, the stars and the position of the astralogical god of the underworld, (represented by the serpent etching of the compass). These amulets are used for fortune telling and for forcasting horoscopes for individuals as well as for the entire village. This Batak Scapula Amulet is animal origin and is in excellant condition.
