Basil Wolverton - Original Comic Strip Art (undated). One of the early pioneers of comics, Basil Wolverton is fondly remembered by many for his unique and bizarre creations. Best known for his "stunning" rendition of Lena the Hyena, Wolverton's characters were impossibly twisted and incredibly unforgettable. Offered here is a rare example of his caricature skills, a six-panel strip lampooning the Cold War tensions between John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro. Although the piece is undated, it almost certainly dates to the early 1960s and the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Fully rendered in pen and ink, the piece measures approximately 15" x 11.25", and is in excellent condition, save for a small scrape between panels five and six which has removed a layer of paper and extends about .25" into the art on Castro's sleeve. There is a small amount of staining in the balloon in panel two and a minor text correction in panel five. These flaws are extremely insignificant, however, and do not detract in any way from the extreme desirability of this modern masterpiece. The art has been signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
