Basil Wolverton - Marco From Mars Daily Comic Str
Basil Wolverton - Marco From Mars Daily Comic Strip Original Art (circa 1929). Born in Oregon in 1909, Basil Wolverton was a one-of-a-kind cartoonist. He started out as a vaudeville performer and radio announcer. In 1929, Wolverton created his first comic strip, Marco from Mars, but couldn't sell it to a newspaper -- it was just too intense. His first successes in the cartooning happened nearly a decade later, in the comic books, with science fiction features like Spacehawk, Space Patrol, and Meteor Martin. Wolverton had a unique talent for portraying grotesqueries, either horrific or humorous, and thus his work had a profound impact on Underground wunderkind Robert Crumb. Even in this, one of his earliest efforts, Wolverton's terrifying imagery and skill at rendering scenes in what he would later term his "spaghetti and meatball school of design" are enough to give Sigmund Freud the willies! This daily was drawn in ink and pencil on coquille paper, has an image area of 18" x 4", and is in Excellent condition.
