Basil Rathbone ALS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Very scarce handwritten letter by Basil Rathbone referencing Sherlock Holmes, whom he brought to life in fourteen movies, radio and on Broadway. Single page letter dated 23 May 1963 reads in full, ''Dear Mr. MacCann, Although working at Universal Studios at the same time as Miss Montez was working there I met her but rarely, & know nothing of her private life. Of course I appreciate having played the part of Sherlock Holmes, but it is by no means the most demanding or rewarding part I have every played! Thank you very much for your considerable & continued interest in my work. It is most gratifying. Sincerely, Basil Rathbone''. This letter suggests Rathbone's ambivalent feelings toward his famous character -- considered a great Shakespearean actor and leading man, he was so typecast as the detective that he felt it hampered his ability to secure other roles. Later in this life, however, he embraced the character, even appearing in Sherlock Holmes costume for television commercials. Several folds and a small hole to upper left corner. Both Rathbone's handwriting and signature are very clear and bold. 6.75'' x 10'' letter is in very good plus condition.
