Barry E. O’Meara, Napoleon in Exile; or, A Voice
Barry E. O’Meara, Napoleon in Exile; or, A Voice from St. Helena (London: W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, 1822), first edition, in two volumes, 512 and 542 pages, respectively, marbled endpapers and edges, spine and corners bound in black leather with marbled boards, 8vo (5.5” x 8.75”). Barry Edward O’Meara (1786-1836) was an Irish surgeon aboard the HMS Bellerophon when Napoleon surrendered to the British in July 1815. O’Meara accompanied Napoleon to his exile on St. Helena, where the erstwhile emperor died in 1821. The following year, O’Meara published this two-volume book, with the subtitle The Opinions and Reflections of Napoleon on the Most Important Events of His Life and Government, in His Own Words, claiming that Sir Hudson Lowe (1769-1844), an Anglo-Irish Major-General, had abused Napoleon after being appointed as his custodian. After the book was published, Lowe tried to prosecute O’Meara, but the public was squarely on the author’s side. Both volumes are in very good condition with minor wear on the leather bindings; a bookplate was removed from the inside front cover of each, where the residue remains.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
