Gorgeous watch in mint condition. 6.5" chain. Face is 3.5 cm diameter. Jeweler is Barret & Sherwood, who, according to the 1888 Langley directory, were "Importers and Manufacturers Jewelry and Diamonds, agents American Watches, 140 Montgomery." Appears to be 14k, but is not marked. Comes in a green box for Diamond Parlor Jewelry Co., 712 Market St, San Francisco. This company does not appear in the 1888 directory, but appears in post-1900 directories. Perhaps this company sold the earlier watch or the two items are not related. Inscription on inside of watch case reads: "Paula/ from/ Will & Toney/ 1888" Outside of watch case has ornate engraving of a house with floral pattern and the initials HP or PH.

The Barret & Sherwood partnership dates back to 1852. Robert Sherwood (1827-1893) came to San Francisco from Ireland in 1850 and started working in the mines of Calaveras County. The firm exhibited a selection of their gold quartz jewelry at the New York Crystal Palace Exposition in 1853. The partner, Samuel Barret died in 1860. Sherwood went under his own name until the 1865 directory, where he took up the Barrett & Sherwood name. The directory listing for 1888 lists a William James Sherwood as running this business. Perhaps William was Robert's son.
