Barbara Krafft nee Steiner had come to Vienna with her father who was at the same time her teacher, and there exhibited her first portrait, of a French Abbé. She joined the k. k. Academy of Fine Arts and married the apothecary Joseph Krafft. She lived in Salzburg between 1803 - 1821 and later in Mähren, Prague, and finally Bamberg, producing numerous portraits, including some of the emperors Josef II., Leopold II., Franz II., along with various nobles. Her fresh and carefree manner finds its unmistakable expression in the lively style of her portrait. Her son Johann August Krafft in the portrait above likewise became a painter as well as a lithographer. He accompanied his mother on her travels and moved with her to Bamberg, then on to Munich. He left behind numerous lithographs, including some of King Otto I. of Greece and Duke Maximilian of Bavaria.
