with sterling cap, 2" tall by 1" in diameter, mounted on a tapered piece of ash or oak in old varnished surface, with several filled nail holes, 36.75" in length. The sterling cap finely engraved on the top W. Otis to D.L. Harris, Springfield Mass., and on the collar in two separate blocks of text: Shoot if you must, this old grey head, but spare your country's flag she said. J.G. Whittier Sep. 1861. And in another, This cane made of timber from the attic window of Barbara Frietchie's house, Frederick, MD.

An internet search located at least two other similar canes, one in the collection of John Greenleaf Whittier, and one belonging to Rutherford B. Hayes. A fine relic.
