TLS, two pages, 6.25 x 8.5, The Vice President's House letterhead, May 14, 1985. Letter to Gary Lorenz, in part: "I appreciate the letter you wrote to me and your interest in promoting Americanism. Your question of how to help this country echo my own thoughts on the subject…First, you might want to make a list of things that worry you: crime, pollution, child abuse, educating our children, or unemployment and determine where your time and energy can best be utilized. Through this same exercise 4 1/2 years ago, I chose to become involved in the eradication of illiteracy. I think you will be surprised to find that you will get carried away by the enthusiasm of the many people in this country who are dedicated to one cause or another—and all with one goal—to make this a better place in which to live. You can also make a significant contribution by upholding the law, being a good citizen, getting involved in your local government, volunteer for a community-service organization, and most importantly, maintaining your deep loyalty to your country. Our country will prosper from those who can attack the problems that surface, endure the pain to correct them, and serve with human sensitivity and strength." Bush adds a brief handwritten line to the conclusion: "Hope this helps—the photograph will come later." In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
