Bankruptcy and Slaves. Letter from Bran
Bankruptcy and Slaves. Letter from Brandon, Miss., Apr. 20, 1843, 31/2 pp., integral address-leaf with circular Brandon postmark, manuscript "10," to John Chilton in Vicksburg. Discussing the fraudulent business activities of John and R.M. Hobson. A judgement has been levied to satisfy the complaint, on the seventy to eighty Negroes owned, together with a plantation. Details of illegal deals between them; finally John "ran them off" to Jackson, N.C., where the slaves waited for the bankruptcy trial. Interesting letter on legal - and not so legal - shenanigans, where the prizes were a plantation and slaves. Small piece lacking where letter opened, about 1/2x 1/2", with loss of a few words, else very fine.
