An exquisite collection of documents from notable businesses and figures in La Porte. John Conly sold his banking business in 1871 and the Bank of La Porte was incorporated in October with $12,000 capital. John Conly continued as president of the bank, even though he had chartered the Bank of Chico in December. Simeon Wheeler was the cashier and the Wells, Fargo & Company's agent. In December 1875, The Kleckner brothers of Port Wine and Simeon Wheeler bought all the bank's stock. The Bank of La Porte operated until 1890, when it applied to the Superior Court for voluntary dissolution December 24th. Orange IR 2-cent stamp (low center). Signed by Amandes Kleckner (president). Amandes Kleckner, and his brother, Abraham, owned the Port Wine general store where John Conly & Co. had their office. In the fall of 1862, the Kleckner brother built one of first 3 stone buildings, not only a sign of their success but to prevent future losses from fire.; 15x Bank of La Porte checks (The Anglo-Californian bank, Limited), black print on creme, vignette of miners next to full ore cart. Dixon Brabban was part owner of the Bank of La Porte, joining Simeon Wheeler in the Bank of La Porte's ownership when he purchased the Kleckner brothers stock, where he became president. He was mason, tax collector (1883-1889) for Plumas and Lassen Counties and the portion of Sierra County north of Canyon Creek, general merchandiser (1889), and a Wells Fargo Agent (1888-1892). Brabban was also a resident and living at Secret Diggings in 1863, when he bought The Feather River and Secret Diggings Ditch from James F. In 1863, he operated Wheeler Brothers Mountain Express with his brother Sam. In December 1874, along with the Kleckner brother, Wheeler bought all of the the Bank of La Porte's stock and was a cashier, notary, and a Wells Fargo agent (1880-1887); 2x hand written letters on letterhead paper from the Banking House of John Conly & Co.; 1x hand written shopping list and note to bank, signed by W.R. Honodel; 2x deposit slips, one blank, one deposited by Jonas Learter(?) in the Banking House of John Conly & Co.; 1x Bank of La Porte check, unnumbered, made out to "Pike (illegible) #60", signed by Chg. Cal T Co. Printed by Bacon & Company, Printers, S.F.; 1x promissory note, dated October 12, 1864, promising to pay John Conly & Co. $150 in U.S. Gold Coin, torn/missing 1x1.5" square at top; 2x accounting sheets for the Bank of La Porte, one is "in account with The Anglo-California Bank Limited", the other is "in account with National Gold Bank and Trust Company.
