<B>Bamana (Mali)</B></I><BR>Monkey Mask, probably from the <I>Kore</B></I> Society<BR>Wood, metal<BR>Height: 12 1/8 in. Width: 7 inches Depth: 6 ¼ inches<BR><BR>This mask has a rounded open jaw with metal teeth, a long straight nose, and an arcing forehead with metal applique on its lower edge.<BR><BR>Initiates, at the end of their period of seclusion, wore monkey and other animal masks and imitated the animals they incarnated. The monkey, in this case, is the black colobus.<BR><BR>Most of the exposed surfaces are lightly abraded.
