Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (Maryland) A 1849 dated certificate for 100 shares issued to Johns Hopki
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (Maryland) A 1849 dated certificate for 100 shares issued to Johns Hopkins, although not signed by him. An engraved vignette of the early "Tom Thumb" locomotive is at top center. Johns Hopkins became a director of the B&O in 1847 and in 1855 was named Chairman of its Finance Committee. Desiring to leave his fortune for the good of humanity, he was the benefactor of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, leaving an amount of $7 million to be divided equally between the two. This is the earliest B&O certificate we are aware of issued to Hopkins. Two diamond cut cancellations appear at bottom. Very Fine. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
