This is a possible Baltimore, Maryland school girl silk on linen needlework sampler. Found locally in Baltimore, Maryland. Mid 19th century. Inscribed "The preceding lines "Dear little house" Dear shabby street, Dear books and beds and food to eat, How feeble words are to express the facets of you tenderness" Singed C.M. This is the sweetest little rhyme. The sampler has colorful silk flowers, homes, trees and clouds. Numbers to the right of the sampler. The sampler is matted with a new ivory color silk matte under glass framed in a mid 19th century American gold gilt wood gesso molded frame. I do not thank the frame is original to the sampler although it is very old and dates from the period of the frame. The glass is new and it has new backing paper on the back of the frame.
There is a exhibit called Maryland Schoolgirl Samplers and Embroideries featuring needlework from 1738-1860 at the Maryland Historical Society 201 W. Monument St.
Baltimore.
Condition: Silk is still bright. The linen backing has age overall stains. Gold gilt frame has been touched up and some losses to gesso frame decoration. Size. Sampler inside of matte is 11"1/2 by 15" Matte and sampler are 15" by 13" 1/2. Frame is 17" 3/4 by 19" 3/4. Frame is 2" 1/4 wide.
