Ballard Number 8 “Union Hill Rifle” with Stevens Pope marked barrel, serial number “23949”. Barrel and false muzzle numbered “622”, also marked “21” over “1.41”, .32-40 caliber. Weight is approx. 14lbs. The rifle shows a 30” slightly heavy weight octagon barrel, with original false muzzle serial numbered to match the barrel and modern manufactured bullet starter fitted to this rifle. The barrel shows approx. 80-90% original blue finish, thinning at its edges, and some slight drifting to a brown patina. The frame shows 30-50% drifting case colors of the type found on Stevens rifles. The checkered walnut stocks are very good with sharp checkering, some minor dings, mars, scratches. The stock is also of Stevens type with Schuetzen features and Swiss butt. The rifle shows an extended lever and double set triggers. The barrel is mounted with blocks for a scope and shows a period adjustable windage front sight with spirit level. There are two tap holes with tap screws in the area of the barrel address. The rear of the frame is drilled and tapped for tang sight which is missing. The action is good, the bore is fine to near excellent. A classic Pope barreled Ballard. Note: See Lot# 414 for correct Stevens Pope type mold used with this rifle. Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
