Ball & Williams Ballard Carbine .46 Cal RF
SN 4475 Civil War era (1862-1865) pivoting drop-block lever actuated saddle ring carbine with a 22" octagon and round barrel, 2-leaf rear sight marked for 100 and 500 yards and an aperture marked for 250 yards, smooth manual extractor actuator stud, sling swivels, steel buttplate. Barrel is stamped, "Merwin & Bray, Agts New York", "Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861", "Ball & Williams Worcester Mass." Left receiver is stamped "46 H", which I believe is a unit designation. You could probably find which units were issued these carbines. New York bought 500, and Kentucky bought 4000. The serial number matches on the breech, barrel and receiver. The finish on the barrel is a dark gray patina with traces of blue, and an area pitting near the front sight. The receiver , lever, and buttplate are a gray patina with very light pin-prick pitting. .Action works well. Hammer may fire both rimfire and centerfire cartridges. Wood is very good with rubs and scratches. Bore is bright and shiny with lots of sharp rifling. Condition is very good as Antique Firearm.
