Ball 16 Cr. 4 $1000 1861 Bond Very Fine. The first 810 bonds of this denomination were issued at Montgomery. The portrait is of Jefferson Davis. The Bank of Charleston stepped up to the plate to purchase this bond less than a month after Fort Sumter. This bond has lightly toned over the years. This is a trait often seen for this design. This bond was once mounted with two stamp hinges and a couple of small stains are also noticed. A couple of pinholes are mentioned for cataloging accuracy. These early Confederate bonds appear only when great collections are sold and William Bond had such a collection. He was a major contributor to the Criswell reference series.
From The William A.
