Ball 10 Cr. 1 $50 1861 Bond Very Good. This is one of only 250 bonds issued for this Montgomery type. Very few of those remain for the collectors of today. June 2005 saw a Ball 10 go for $8050. The bonds of this 1861 issue have the American Bank Note Co. New Orleans imprint, though they were actually printed at the company's New York office. A large moisture stain is noticed, the top edge has been reinforced, and it was once mounted. The portrait is of Howell Cobb, president of the Confederate Provisional Congress. This bond is signed by Register of the Treasury Alex(ander) B. Clitherall. When the Confederate capital moved to Richmond in July 1861, Clitherall decided to resign and stay in his home state. Therefore Clitherall's signature is only found on the Montgomery issues of the February 28, 1861 bonds.
From The William A.
