Baldwin & Company were initially jewelers and watchmakers. They were one of the few firms, which met (and exploited) the demand for a sufficient medium of exchange in the West. They began coining in May 1850, and for several months flourished until a soon-to-be rival coiner, James King of William, brought to the public's attention their alleged fraudulent activities. The public outcry against all private gold coins was swift and by March, 1851 additional state laws were passed and enforced by the government, virtually curtailing the issuance of private gold coins except for those of Moffat & Co. and the U.S. Assay Office until 1854. While not as popular as the $10 "Horseman" specimens, all Baldwin pieces are scarce. Part of this circumstance is due to the coin being as much as 2 1/2% overvalued and their being subsequently turned in and melted.1850 $5 Baldwin Five Dollar--Tooled, Repaired--ANACS. XF Details, Net VF20. K-2, R.5. It has been three years since we last offered an example of this elusive Territorial issue. This issue was delivered the same year as the widely recognized Baldwin & Co. "Horseman" Ten Dollar. The present Five Dollar gold coin displays bright yellow-gold surfaces that are unnaturally bright from the tooling. Actually there is much detail to this specimen and only some "honest wear" due to handling. Unfortunately, this specimen has been expertly tooled on both the obverse and reverse. Nevertheless, this coin has strong detail and will be a good representative for a more modest collecting budget. Listed on page 295 of the current Guide Book. From The Estate of Jack L. Klausen.
