From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Balie Peyton (November 26, 1803 – August 18, 1878) Baillie Peyton, Sr., John Hays’ cousin. Like Hays, he came from Tennessee but eventually moved to California. In 1835, Peyton represented Tennessee in the U. S. House of Representatives. During the Mexican War, he served as a colonel of the 5th Louisiana Regiment. From 1848-1852, he was the U. S. Minister to Chili. Later, in California, he was the San Francisco city attorney and eventually, the U. S. District Attorney of California. (1/6 plate). Daguerreotype 2.75" x 3.25"
