Sisto Badalocchio Parma 1585 - after 1620, the rest on the flight into Egypt” This intimate portrayal of The Rest on the Flight into Egypt is a characteristic example of the type of pictures in which Sisto excelled. It demonstrates theartist's ability in combining the tenderness of Correggio with the monumentality of the Carracci and in particular of Annibale, under whose direction he worked in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome from 1603, and in whose house he is known to have lodged, together with Giovanni Lanfranco. This oil may be closely compared to Sisto's painting of the same subject in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford (see La Scuola dei Carracci. I seguaci di Annibale e Agostino, Modena 1995, reproduced incolour fig. 140; and, more recently, The Genius of Rome. 1592-1623, exh. cat., London, Royal Academy, 2001, p. 129, cat. no. 40, reproduced in colour). Whilst the overall simplicity of the composition is Carraccesque and demonstrates aknowledge of Annibale's Roman works, the colour scheme and play of light are profoundly Emilian in spirit and particularly reminiscent of Correggio.
