Lot of 2 different mills. These mills were in the vicinity of the original discovery site for the Comstock by the Grosh brothers. Both stereoviews are published by J.C. Scripture, Big Trees, Cal. and part of the series "Peeps at Scenes in Washoe." 1) Prominent close-up shot of the Bacon Mill with sign clearly in view. Contrast is light, but it's a nice shot regardless. Stamped on the back for Charles A. Smallwood, San Francisco. The Bacon Mill was located in Silver City at the intersection of Gold Canyon and American Ravine. It was built in 1862. In 1865, it was processing ore from the Bacon Mine in Gold Hill. By 1868, it was controlled by William Sharon and the Bank of California. In 1869, Fair and Mackay bought it to process Hale & Norcross mine ore. In 1871, it was reported to have 20 stamps and a 40 ton daily capacity. 2) No. 3445. Bacon and Trench Mills, Silver City, Nevada." View from on the hills behind the mills, looking down onto them with a man posing. Good contrast, sharp focus. Stamped on the back for VC bookseller F. Boegle, who operated in the 1870s and 80s. The Trench Mill was built in 1860 in lower Silver City near the mouth of American Ravine by Erastus Sparrow and Joseph Trench who also owned a mine in Gold Hill. Mackay and Fair purchased it in 1869. In the 1870s, it had 40 stamps and a 20-ton capacity (Ref: Ansari) Silver City Nevada Fred Holabird Collection
