Exceptional vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 stoic bust photo, beautifully signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my Pal Al & team mate, from Babe Ruth.” In fine condition, with a hint of mild toning to edges.
Ruth enjoyed adding “Pal” to many of his autographs, but only a finite number of ballplayers were lucky enough to call Babe a team mate. As a one-time pitcher himself, did Ruth gift this image to 1928 Yankees hurler Al Shealy or 1924 moundsman Al Mamaux? Or maybe it was presented to 1921-1922 catcher Al DeVormer after the fantasy battery tossed the ball around? The answer remains a mystery.
