Vintage glossy 7.5 x 9.25 photo of Ruth taking a practice swing in his Yankee pinstripe pants, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To my good friend Merla Mills from Babe Ruth, 6-15-48.” In very good to fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges, some slight irregular adhesion to inscription, mounting remnants to reverse, intersecting horizontal and vertical crease to bottom portion of image, and a few light surface marks and creases.
This historically significant photo was signed just two days after the Babe’s appearance at the 25th anniversary celebration of the opening of Yankee Stadium—his last in Yankee pinstripes. At the time, Ruth’s body was ravaged by cancer...but true to form the great slugger still acquiesced to this autograph request for his “good friend Merla.” Many fans, knowing that the end was near for the Bambino, descended on Ruth for one last autograph...a chore he took seriously to the very end.
