<Our item number 118581><B>Ruth, George Herman &#34;Babe&#34;.</B> &#40;1895-1948&#41; One of the greatest baseball players in the history of the sport; he hit 60 home runs in 1927 in only 156 games and held the lifetime record of 714 until Henry Aaron broke it in 1974. First day cover of the &#34;Centennial of Baseball 1939-1939&#34; stamp, which was issued in Cooperstown, New York, in conjunction with the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame, of which Ruth was one of the first inductees, signed and inscribed &#34;<I>From Babe Ruth For Gumby&#39;s Stamp Collection</I>&#34; in blue ink in the address section. The person to whom Ruth inscribed the cover was Lou Chapman, a longtime baseball writer for the Milwaukee Sentinelwho was covering the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was nicknamed &#34;Scoop&#34; and &#34;Gumby&#34; for his abilities to track down a story.
