BUTTERFIELD, DANIEL
(1831 - 1901) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run, awarded the Medal of Honor for Gaines Mill, and wounded in that battle and Gettysburg. He also helped design the corps badges for the army and is credited with writing "Taps". S.P. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" b/w [1895], a cabinet chest, up portrait of Butterfield in later years, boldly inscribed and signed on verso: "For my friend & comrade C. Sonnenborg from his Past Commander Daniel Butterfield". Backstamp by Fredericks, New York. Toned at top, lightly soiled. Verso bears superficial chipping at left affecting one letter in inscription, else very good. Private Sonnenborg served in Sickles' Brigade.
