Ridley (1702-74), author of sermons, poems, critical treatises and biographies. His (published) assize sermons were preached in Thetford and Norwich in 1753, but most of his two dozen sermons printed between 1736 and 1764 were delivered in London, where, to judge by the number of churches named (ten), he was much in demand. His experience as an actor gave him a ‘judicious and graceful manner of speaking in the pulpit’ (Nichols, Lit. anecdotes, 1.642). In this present one on the occasion of the general fast on Good Friday 1793, he is forthright about the expected fate of the French revolutionary government : "National iniquity shall lead on to national ruin”.
