BURJI MAMLUK: Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Barsbay (1422-1438), gold ashrafi (3.43g), Al-Qahira (Cairo) mint, AH 825-841. A-998. Choice extremely fine.
The ashrafi denomination was introduced during the reign of Barsbay, hence being named after his title Al-Malik Al-Ashraf. It persisted through the reigns of the following Mamluk rulers and other Islamic dynasties, most notably the Safavids and the Ottomans.
