<p><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>[BURGOYNE’S CONVENTION ARMY] </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>Letter referencing the British troops surrendered by John Burgoyne to American General Horatio Gates, negotiated as the “Convention of Saratoga” whereby the British troops and German mercenaries would be allowed to return to England. Detained in New England when Congress was reticent to let them go, they were taken to Virginia in 1778 where they remained until 1781. They were then transferred to Maryland upon Cornwallis’ invasion of Virginia. Offered is a letter referencing this journey south. ALS “Jas. Young,” 1p, 4to, Philadelphia, Dec. 12, 1778. In full, “The Quarter M[aste]r Genl Department have this day made a requisition to me for twenty four Waggons [sic] to be at North Wales for the use of the Convention Troops, you will therefore immediately order the aforesaid Number to be at North Wales by to morrow morning. I hope you will do the utmost in your power to have this business performed that the troops be not delayed on acct of Waggons... ”Brown ink is entirely legible. Light damp stains of little effect; top third cleanly detached along fold; irregular bottom edge with paper loss along folds affecting two words; o/w in good condition.</span></p>
