(b. 1907) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1969-86), a strict constructionist in criminal matters. A humorous 12"" x 16"" print depicting Irving R. Kaufman surrounded by characteristics of his life by Betty Wells in 1976. Inscribed and signed in lower white margin: ""For Hon. Irving Kaufman, tireless worker for improvement of justice, Warren E. Burger"". IRVING KAUFMAN (1910-1992) was a noted judge of U. S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1949 and judge of U. S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit from 1961 -1987. He is best remembered as the presiding judge in the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg espionage case, sentencing the couple to death for selling atomic secrets to the Russians. Judge Kaufman also sided with John Lennon after a lengthy battle in the U.S. court system over whether Lennon could remain in the U. S. after the famous ""Beatle"" pleaded guilty to drug charges in England. In 1987 President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Framed in black frame. Overall fine.
