BULGARIA: Anonymous, 13th century, scyphate AE "trachy" (6.25g), Ratto-222, standing facing figures of king, wearing stemma with pendilia, chlamys and divitision, holding patriarchal cross on long shaf / St. Theodore, bearded and nimbate, wearing short military tunic, holding long sword; they hold between them, patriarchal cross on long shaft, partly pierced, Fine to Very Fine, RRR. This type is mentioned in an article of the archeologist Ivan Bachvarov, published in 1971. There, the author described such a pierced copper coin, found during archeological excavations in the fortress of Ryahovets, near Tarnovo, the capital of Medieval Bulgaria. The author is positive that this is an imitation dating back to the middle of XIII Century, using a coin of John III Vatatzes as the prototype.
and using as prototype the John III Vatatzes’ coinage.

In our subjective opinion as well, the origin of these coins is Bulgarian, made after a Byzantine model. It was likely struck in a workshop somewhere in or close to Turnovo in the thirteenth century. The inscription on the coin might read IW ***?OT, which could mean both John III Vatatzes and Ioan II Assen. The fact that there is no specific type of John Vatatzes upon which this coin is based shows us that we could possibly call it «imitative», but only in the sense that it has the prototype and the style of the Byzantine coinage of that time. Another similar type that has been discussed on the Classical Numismatics Discussion Board by FORVM is clearly cast, although this and others there are clearly struck. Ratto lists this type as from Chersonesos Taurica (Cherson), which is incorrect in our opinion.
