L.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 16, 1846 to John N. Cushing noting his receipt of his letter ""...complaining of the charges of the Consul of the United Sates at Bordeaux, against the Brig 'Salisbury' belonging to you, on a late voyage to that port. Copies of your letter & of his account therein enclosed have been transmitted to Mr. Grigsby , for his explanation..."" Usual folds do little to affect signature, otherwise near fine. Together with an envelope addressed to one T. Biglow Laurence of Boston, franked by Buchanan's secretary in 1857 and a copy of a land grant bearing Buchanan's secretarial signature. Three pieces.
