BUCHANAN, JAMES
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Lengthy manuscript L.S. as Secretary of State, 4pp. legal folio, Washington, Mar. 19, 1846, to Senator John Davis regarding a petition made to his department by Mrs. Sally Blake for ""...expense incurred by her, in the case of one William Baird, who having fled the Province of New Brunswick after committing a burglary and robbery in her house...was delivered up by the British Authorities..."". Beautifully written in a fine secretarial script, and boldly signed by Buchanan. Near fine.
