BUCHANAN ( George ). Opera omnia, ad optimorum codicum fidem summo studio recognita & castigata : nunc primum in unum collecta, ab innumeris pene mendis, quibus pleræque omnes editiones antea scatebant, repurgata; ac variis insuper notis aliisque utilissimis accessionibus illustrata & aucta : quorum omnium syllabus post præfationem exhibetur. Curante Thoma Ruddimanno … Edinburgi, apud Robertum Freebairn, Typographum Regium, 1715FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, pp (2), xxii, 26 ; (6), 466, 37, (1, blank) ; (4), 41, (1), (1, blank), (1), 30 ; (2), 13-18 : (4), 104 ; (6), 34 ; (4), 241, (1, blank) ; 16 ; 36 ; 38, as usual the leaves of Ane Admonition are not present, without the frontispiece, folio, contemporary calf, double labels, gilt : binding worn and rubbed but sound, strong and otherwise very good. The first volume contains principally Buchanan's historical works and the second his poetry, with some grammatical writings and some letters. All of the works are in Latin except Chamaeleon, a satire in the Scottish tongue wriitten against the Laird of Lidingtone. Despite the controversy this publication aroused, it is a well edited and valuable edition of the works. The dispute arose over Ruddiman’s free strictures on Buchanan’s character and political principles. It was published in the year he commenced printing with his brother.ENGLISH PRE 1801; EDINBURGH PRINTED; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
