BRYAN, WILLIAM JENNINGS
167. WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN (1860-1925) American lawyer and politician, Secretary of State, and the chief prosecutor who dueled with Clarence Darrow in the famous Scopes "Monkey" trial. Interesting A.L.S. first in pen, then completed and signed in pencil, 2pp. 4to., on Hotel Lafayette letterhead [n.p. "En Route", ca. 1920], concerning the health of a friend and the chances of the Democratic ticket in the 1920 election. In part: "...I am very sorry if a mistake of mine caused me to miss you besides putting you to trouble. I had intended to make it clear that I would be in Washington on Sept. 21st. 24 & 25. I had engagements in Pa covering 22 & 23d. We are very much concerned about Helen's health.. Wm. says she weighs less than at any time since their marriage. I had thought it might be worth while for her to try the Miami climate but I would rather trust her judgment on the subject...We shall be glad to welcome here to Miami whenever she feels it safe to come...In the meantime we shall do the best we can to make Mary & little Helen comfortable...". Bryan then adds a cryptic political passage: "...All matters affecting the treaty & foreign affairs will have to await the election - with chances much against the Dem. ticket...". Usual folds, otherwise very good condition. $200-300
