BROWN LEATHER BELT REMOVED FROM VON RICHTHOFEN’S
BROWN LEATHER BELT REMOVED FROM VON RICHTHOFEN’S BODY. A wide brown leather belt worn by von Richthofen over his flying suit. Photographs, including a picture on page 76 of Carisella’s book Who Killed The Red Baron?, show pilots of Jasta 1, including von Richthofen, wearing belts of this nature over their flying clothes. A mark on the leather (at approximately 33”) from the heavy black-painted roller-style buckle would indicate that the owner was of slight stature, which, of course, von Richthofen was. Mrs. E. W. Cunningham, widow of Corporal John Bernard Cunningham of the 44th Battalion, sent the belt to Carisella. Also included with this lot is a letter from Mrs. Cunningham and a photograph of her husband. A photograph of the belt appears on page 139 of Who Killed The Red Baron? CONDITION: Leather is of good quality, supple, and tanned on one side. Excellent condition for its age. SIZE: 45-1/2” long; 1-1/2” wide. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53514 CW15 (4,500-5,000)
