BROWN, JOHN
(1800 - 1859) American abolitionist who became obsessed with idea of abolishing slavery by force, massacred five slavery adherents at Pottawatomie, seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry and was hanged for treason. A.D.S. 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], Dec. 1, 1840, in full: "Borrowed of my wife Mary B. Brown one Hundred and fifty dollars which I am to pay on my return home. John Brown". In 1840 Brown visited western Virginia to survey land belonging to Oberlin College, and seems to have started developing a plan for colonizing colored people there. Folds, some toning and soiling, uneven bottom margin, nevertheless boldly penned and very good.
