BRITISH PILOT'S 402 SQUADRON HAWKER HURRICANE ENAMELED CIGARETTE CASE
A fine ca. 1943 silver cigarette case with enamel painting depicting a Hawker Hurricane in flight, markings indicating the aircraft is from 402 Squadron. The 4 7/8" x 3 1/2" x 3/8" case is hand-painted in enamel. Within appears an English sterling mark, Birmingham assay mark and a "T" date mark indicating manufacture in 1943. The gold-washed interior also bears the with maker's mark: "T. B.". One miniscule chip to the enamel at left, else fine. Provenance: The War Museum. Formed in March, 1941, the squadron initially flew in in a defensive, fighter role before becoming the first becoming the first "Hurribomber" unit in June, 1941. Early the following year, the 402 returned to a fighter role and commenced replacing its Hurricanes with Spitfires. Provenance: The War Museum.
