A very nice example of an early pattern 1822 British general officer's saber measuring 40 3/4" overall with an etched 34" pipe back blade. This example probably dates to the late 1830s to 1840s because the etching includes a crowned "VR" on each side as well as foliate decoration. Heavily gilded brass hilt with early folding rear guard and forward guard has a pierced medallion featuring a crowned crossed baton and sword. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows wear to the etching and a bit of cleaned pitting near the tip. Hilt shows light wear as does the scabbard. (02-24677/BF). $800-1200.
