BREZHNEV, LEONID
(1906 - 1982) Soviet leader who engineered the ouster of Khrushchev, chairman of the Presidium, and established the Brezhnev Doctrine entitling the Soviet Union to interfere in affairs of Warsaw Pact countries. Uncommon S.P. 4"" x 6"" b/w, a fine informal portrait of Brezhnev standing in the woods against a tree. Signed on the verso at upper left with the ironic inscription: ""1976 for the long memory L. Brezhnev"". In 1976, Brezhnev had a frightening experience: a near-death experience which left him clinically dead. Although doctors managed to resuscitate him, he suffered serious thought and speech pattern damage, and did not return to work for two months. This same year, however, was also one of his most productive, as he signed, with Gerald Ford, the Underground Nuclear Explosions for Peaceful Purposes Treaty. Fine condition.
