(1790 - 1854) Mexican politician and soldier, he held supreme power as the substitute for Santa Anna while the latter was in the field (1842-3), deposed by a revolution but later led forces with Santa Anna at Cerro Gordo. Fine content war-date A.L.S ""Gutierrez"" by an official of the Ministry of War and the Navy, 2pp. 4to. on official letterhead, [Mexico City], Apr. 14, 1847 to Gen. Cosem Furlong who commanded forces in the State of Puebla. In this important letter Furlong's voluntary re-assignment is accepted in order to offer command of the state's forces to Bravo, Furlong is thanked for his sacrifice, and the letter to Bravo is quoted. In part: ""...the substitute President of the Republic [Pedro Maria Anaya]...sees in you [Bravo] one of the most respectable and distinguished generals in the army...he has decided to appoint your excellency General Commander of the State of Puebla, hoping you will immediately march to the State Capitol...our common enemy has advanced in that region, and it is very important that your excellency lead the brave Poblanos so that...they devote themselves to the defense of the fatherland..."" Very good condition. Four days later Bravo fought in support of Santa Anna at Cerro Gordo with disastrous results for both Mexican commanders. Puebla itself was besieged on May 15th.
