(23.2 x 17.8 cm) 1932 ESTIMATE: $15,000-20,000 PROVENANCE Galerie Zabriskie, PARIS LITERATURE Guy Dornand, "Les coulisses du Music-Hall," PARIS MAGAZINE, no. 29, January 1934, pp. 43-48. (slightly cropped version illustrated on p. 47) Brassan, LE PARIS SECRET DES ANN+ES TRENTE, Paris, 1976, p. 140 (tightly cropped version illustrated) Brassan, THE SECRET PARIS OF THE THIRTIES, NEW YORK, 1976, n.p. (tightly cropped version illustrated) This is a rare vintage print from Brassan's important early series on the backstage at the Folies-BergFre. Two photographs from that group appear in Brassan's acclaimed first book, PARIS DE NUIT, 1932. In a later book, he wrote "The magic of a great music hall is not what appears on the stage, rich and dazzling as that may be. The magic-full of surprises, full of the unexpected-occurs backstage....The heated and feverish atmosphere of the dressing rooms while the girls are making their twenty costume changes, the way they clatter up and down the stairs, the machinist's bridge with its forest of ropes-each with its secret name-the dizzying views down onto the stage, new and astonishing perspectives...." (Brassan, THE SECRET PARIS OF THE THIRTIES, NEW YORK, 1976, n.p.) Brassan's photographs of the Folies-BergFre were probably made specifically for inclusion in Paris de Nuit. A more tightly cropped version was published with five more of his Folies-BergFre photos in PARIS MAGAZINE; later in the '30s others appeared in the book, VOLUPT+S DE PARIS.
