WILLIAM LESSIG, 96TH PA VOLS. Cal. 50. S# 1259. Bbl. 20" rnd. Standard configuration. Brass frame marked “JAMES WARNER SPRINGFIELD MASS / WARNER’S PATENT”. To open the swing up brass breech block, the thumb lever adjacent to the hammer is depressed & the breech block is released by upward pressure on the hook projection. The shell extractor beneath the fore stock is manually operated by pushing rearward. This carbine has long family history descended from Col. William Henry Lessig (1831-1910) had illustrious Civil War career raising his own company in 1861, rising through the ranks while fighting in every major battle in Army of Potomac including Chancellorsville, Antietam, & Gettysburg. After the war he took his engineering background to Colorado becoming territorial surveyor general taking this carbine with him. This carbine was displayed by family loan at the Colorado Historical Society in Denver for over 40 years, first donated Feb. 1, 1940. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: there is lg. file of documentation on this carbine’s provenance, exhibition history, etc. CONDITION: very good overall, medium mustard brass, patina, gray iron patina, stocks sound w/ scattered cosmetic wear, well disguised chip repair right side butt stock abutting top of frame.
