BRACE OF BOSS HAMMER SHOTGUNS WITH CASE.

1) Cal. 16 Ga. S# 1875 (circa 1870). The 30" two stripe Damascus bbls. are engraved "BOSS & CO." "73 ST. JAME'S STREET, LONDON" on concave game rib with small triangles of well cut scroll engraving at breech ends. Bbl. flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 16 bore. Bbls. are fitted with Briley 28 Ga. full length tubes. Round bodied, Jones under lever action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks with rebounding serpentine hammers having tall spurs. Action and locks are engraved with 70% coverage well cut floral scroll. "Boss & Co." is on each lockplate. Newly made buttstock of attractive flame figured and well marbled European walnut measures 14 1/2" over black pad. Closely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend attaches to bbls. with side bolt through oval escutcheons. (Measurements; 28 Ga. sub ga. tubes installed which are fitted with interchangeable chokes.) STOCK: DAH: 1 13/16". DAC: 1 3/16". CAST: approx. 3/8" off. LOP: 14 1/2". WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 8 oz. CONDITION: good as refurbished. Bbls. retaining most of an old rebrown with good definition to pattern. Action and lockplates are dark gray overall. Stocks retain nearly all of their original finish. Action is slightly loose. Bbls. are off face. Locks are good. Hammers are most likely replaced but match well. Side bolt loose on forend, one escutcheon missing. (01-20899/MGM).
2) Cal. 12 Ga. S# 1633 (circa 1857). This gun was originally made as a pinfire. Original bbls. are sleeved with pinholes plugged. Rib is engraved "Thomas Boss & Co." "73 ST. JAME"S STREET" "LONDON". Bbl. flats are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs. Bottoms of bbls .are stamped "SLEEVED". Jones underlever action is fitted with front spring locks having rebounding serpentine hammers. Action and locks are engraved with 80% coverage large scroll. Hammers are engraved with small scroll. Straight grip buttstock of well marbled and figured, dense European walnut, measures 14 1/4" over steel buttplate with long spur. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip, and a silver oval on toe line is engraved with what appears to be a mountain. Matching splinter forend with inlet horn tip is fully checkered and attaches to bbls. with captive side bolt through oval steel escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .729", L: .727". Restrictions: R: .009" (IC), L: .014" (MOD). Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .033", L: .036". STOCK: DAH: 2 3/16". DAC: 1 9/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 1/4". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 11 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: both guns are housed in a vintage leather case with brass corners. Case is lined in scarlet cloth and has old paper Boss label in lid. Bottom compartment is configured for both guns and contains "BOSS" marked square oil bottle, 12 gauge "BOSS" marked snap caps, 2 other pair of snap caps, one for 28 and one for 410, wood and brass cleaning rod, cleaning patches and extra choke tubes, two 28 gauge and two 410. CONDITION: good as refurbished, bbls. retaining nearly all reblack done at time of proof. Action and lockplates are gray to dark gray, over some light pitting and frosting. Buttstock retains most of an old oil finish; sharp edges and drop points well worn. Checkering is recut. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Locks are very good. Right lock with weak main spring. Hammer screws are replaced. Edges of forend show repairs. Case leather is dark with many marks and rubs. New interior cloth is very fine. Old label considerably foxed but generally good with one rub through. Accessories are good. Side bolt replaced in forend which is loose. (01-20900/MGM). BOTH ANTIQUE. $5,000-6000.
