<B>BOYER GONZALES, SR. (1864-1934)</B></I><BR><I>Between Showers Morningside</B></I>, 1921<BR>Oil on canvasboard<BR>8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm)<BR>Signed lower right<BR><BR> Boyer Gonzales, Sr. was an early and important Texas Impressionist. He was born in Houston and raised in Galveston, where his father was a cotton broker. In a twist of fate, Winslow Homer's brother was also a cotton broker. The two met and arrangements were made for Gonzales to paint in Prouts Neck, Maine, with Homer. A great friendship ensued and Boyer spent nine total summers painting with him.<BR><BR>Gonzales was one of the first Texas artists to have an extensive exhibition record in important national museums before 1930. Only a handful of Texas artists had achieved an exhibition record outside the state before the 1920s as Gonzales had.<BR><BR>Exhibited in New York City at the Salmagundi Club in the 1921 Thumb Box Exhibition, <I>Between Showers Morningside,</B></I> is a skilled impressionist rendering of a damp and drizzly day.
