BOWEN, JOHN STEVENS
(1830 - 1863) Confederate major general who was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. He later died, as a POW, days after the surrender of Vicksburg - a victim of the harsh campaign to save the city. Rare war-date D.S. "Jno. S. Bowen" adding rank as colonel , 1p. 4to., Bowling Green, Ky., January 1862, providing an "Estimate of funds for the service of the Quartermasters Dpt." and listing fuel, forage, and "Purchase of Horses for Artillery". Signed at bottom: "Approved Jno. S. Bowen Co. Cmdg. Brig.". Also bears an endorsement signed with rank by Major General WILLIAM J. HARDEE (1815-1873)on verso. A great document showing the Southern Army's preparation for the coming spring campaign which culminated in the battle of Shiloh. Fold affects one letter of Bowen's signature. Near fine.
