<b>402. DON BOSCO </b>(1815 - 1888) Italian priest and Saint, founder of the Salesian Society, he concentrated his efforts on caring-for and educating disadvantaged youths, stating that the teacher should be father, adviser, and friend. Bosco was the first educator to adopt the preventive method. Of punishment he said: "As far as possible avoid punishing . . . . try to gain love before inspiring fear". Rare A.L.S. "<i>D. Bosco Gio[vanni]</i>", 1p. 4to., Turin, June 29, 1870, in Italian to his sponsor Senator Cotta, in part: "<i>...Although I am sure that you have very little free time, I am sending you the program of our Feast regardless, in the hope that, if you could find any time at all, you would be so kind as to attend this Feast which we consider to be most beautiful...</i>". Accompanied by the program for the Feast "Invito Sacro" of the same day, with a mass, comedy and a lottery slated.
