<b>1509. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON</b> (1856 - 1915) Black American educator born a slave, established and headed Tuskegee Institute to provide practical training to blacks. T.L.S. on Tuskegee Institute letterhead, 1p. 4to., Tuskegee, Sept. 21, 1897 to a newspaper editor. In part: "<i>...We have just completed a small building in the town of Tuskegee which is to be used as a public library. This, so far as we know, is the only public library in the state of Alabama that is open to all persons...we have about exhausted all of our funds in providing for the building...</i>", and concludes requesting that copies of the paper be donated on a daily basis. Trimmed at top and bottom margins, light toning, otherwise very good.<b>$150-200</b>
