For 85 years the manuscript was sacredly guarded as a precious family secret. After the last child died (Sir Henry Fielding Dickens), he had left the manuscript to his wife and children with the following message: 'Being his son, I have felt constrained to act upon my father's expressed desire that it should not be published, but I do not think it right that I should bind my children by any such view. He therefore directed his wife and children to consider having it published, if they all agreed. The proceeds of the sale would be divided in equal shares. Sir Henry died in 1933 and the book was published in 1934, by Simon and Schuster, Inc.
